Pre-reading Questions

1. What makes a good mystery story?

2. What are some mysteries that you have read?

3. Do you like mysteries, why or why not?

4. Looking only at the title and cover, make a prediction about what will happen in this story. (Don't read the back yet!)

5. Has The Westing Game won any awards? Is so, which ones?

6. Has Ellen Raskin (the author) written any other youth novels?  Is so, which ones?

  1. #1 Suspense makes a good mystery story/novel because it makes you want to keep reading it until you find out the mystery.

  2. Number 1. You need a good plot and character(s). You need a main problem and solution, Your characters also need their own problem's and solution's. If you have those, then I think it will be a good mystery story. You will also need strong expression's to help tell the story.

  7. I like mysteries because they are full of suspense and you can't put the book down. Sometimes the author for-shadows and I like how in the end it all makes sense.

  8. Blue Group, pretty good start. I had everyone answer #1 and #3 though! While I know this sometimes happens when we all answer at once, branch out! Take a risk! Pick a harder question! Wednesday go back and answer a question that you haven't already answered!

  9. Number 3. I like mysteries because they're suspenseful and you must read more to figure out what happens next. They also include vivid details and many characters.

  10. #4 I think the book The Westing Games is about a guy who hosts these big games and his last name is Westing. I also think that if you win the games then you will get a lot of money or a big house because of the house made out of money on the front cover.

  12. #6 Ellen Raskin has published three other novels, such as The Mysterious Disappearance of Leon (I Mean Noel), released in 1971, Figgs & Phantoms, released in 1974, and The Tattooed Potato and Other Clues, released in 1975.
